Rescue of the Habitat of the Lesser adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus) with the mangrove conservation community in the Rawa Tritih Area, Cilacap Regency.

Rawa Tritih belongs to the Segara Anakan area in Cilacap Regency. This area is a feeding and breeding site for Lesser adjudant  (Leptoptilos javanicus) and other birds. This bird is listed as endangered in the IUCNRedList and is a bird species protected by the Republic of Indonesia Law. No.5 / 1990 derived from P.106 / 2018 issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia.
Leptoptilos javanicus or known in the local language namely the “Bangau Tongtong” is one of the aves class which is unique from its bald head shape. According to Birdlife International, the population of tongtong storks in Indonesia in 2003 was estimated at no more than 2000 individuals. Habitat that continues to experience disturbances in the form of habitat degradation and land conversion has caused this bird population to decline. 
The Segara Anakan area is one of the areas in the island of Java – Bali that is included in the Important Birds Area (IBA) list. The Lesser Adjutant bird is one of the threatened birds in this region. In addition, the Segara Anakan area is also categorized as an Endemic Area Bird in the IBA, so it is important for conservation.

2019 Program

The program begins with mapping the potential of the area through biodiversity research activities collaborating with socio-economic mapping. From the results of this mapping, it becomes a recommendation for activities to be implemented.

Activities carried out to support the conservation of the Lesser Adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus) habitat are through strengthening the capacity of the community to become more familiar with the types of vegetation in the area with theoretical understanding carried out indoor presentation and direct outdoor practice.

Apart from strengthening community capacity, planting activities were also carried out in the mangrove conservation area around the Tritih Rawa area in order to protect the habitat of the Lesser Adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus). This activity involved various parties such as schools, the Karangtalun village government, Perhutani Corporation, RKW II BKSDA Central Java, the Gimangrove mangrove conservation group, and PT Pertamina (Persero).

2020 Program

In 2020, as an effort to conserve the Tongtong Bangau habitat, we will carry out several activities, namely strengthening group capacity in bird monitoring activities, as well as strengthening the economy to strengthen sustainable environmental use through women’s groups.
