Partisipatory of Community to mapping Distribution of the Java sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora) in the karst area of Gunungkidul distict, Yogyakarta Special Province

Gunung Kidul is one of the districts in the Province of D.I. Yogyakarta with an area of ​​1,485.36 km2 or around 46.63% of the total area of ​​the Yogyakarta Special Region. This area has a landscape of karst and into the Gunung Sewu karst cluster. This area has a very high biodiversity potential both in the endo-karst and exo-karst areas. One of them is Javan Sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora). This bird can be found in groups near caves and cliffs that are used as roosting and nesting habitats.

Javan Sparrow is a species of bird that is included in the protected species list in the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. P106 / 2018. For Gunung Kidul district, Javan Sparrow bird population data was held last 2008. Not yet updated regarding Javan Sparrow population data is our basis, Kanopi Indonesia Foundation to conduct studies related to population distribution and to establish a demonstration plot of locations involving community groups to monitor data. Our activities include training the community in the use of bird watching tools to monitor Javan Sparrow, as well as presenting results related to research to relevant stakeholders such as the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA of Yogyakarta Province) for the future to be considered in making policies to protect Java Sparrow and its habitat.
